about

Saturday afternoon - a city whitewashed in sunlight and viewed through half-closed kitchen blinds to the sound of a kettle boiling. The afternoon becomes lethargy itself - nothing but a static backdrop for idle worship. So, the mind is funnelled backward by distraction, backward through time and poured into a street at night some six thousand kilometres away, in front of a bar. You were leaning against the wall, somehow alone, with a cigarette and a smile and a few nonchalant words ready to roll casually off your tongue like an ad-lib scripture. But they were enough for me then. And later posters littered on a bedroom wall, an unfamiliar typeface and glossy figures obscured by moonlight and dust, the adornments of your basilica. And they were enough. Two lips pressed gently, soft as any pillow – The echo of an altar, and an offering, between sheets tangled and cool. An echo reverberating now in the mind like vapor. An echo refusing to be effaced, lingering azure in the kettle on the stove, filling the room and vanishing, all at once - at the edge of a city bathed perpetually in dreary sun. Saturday afternoons become Idolatry - all I think about is you.
